Lack of Permits for Home Improvements Can Affect Your Home Sale

Feb 23, 2015 | Written by: Lori K. MacWilliam, Esq. |

Did you know that a lack of proper permits for home improvement projects can complicate the sale of your home?  Before adding a new deck to your home, or undertaking other home improvement projects, be sure to determine whether your municipality requires a building permit.  If you are required to obtain a building permit, you will also need to schedule a final inspection of the finished work by a municipal construction official in order to receive a certificate of approval.  Failure to obtain either of these documents can hamper your ability to sell your home in the future.  The types of projects that require these documents can vary between municipalities, so call your municipal construction office to determine whether your home improvement project is covered by the local construction code.
