Income Tax Controversy

The attorneys at Gebhardt & Kiefer, P.C., have the experience necessary to advise and respond on behalf of clients (and/or their accountants) who are being audited by the IRS. Beginning with the initial examination, our attorneys will review your tax return, identify potential targets for examination, and begin preparing a defense to the tax position taken by the taxpayer before the IRS proposes its changes.

After the initial examination, our attorneys can file and/or defend any appeal that may be necessary to reach the correct result for your tax position. An IRS appeal can sometimes open new issues that were ignored or overlooked as part of the initial examination. Our attorneys regularly advise clients about strategies to file and/or defend an appeal. We can also work with your accountant to provide additional support if the focus of the IRS becomes how a particular item is identified or defined on your return.

If the IRS is unable or unwilling to agree with your tax position, our tax attorneys are experienced with litigation in the U.S. Tax Court. From petition to final judgment our attorneys will develop and execute a strategy that is designed to support your tax position and minimize or eliminate your tax liability.
